Around 1500, humanist scholars began to bemoan new problems: printers in search of profit, they complained, rushed to print manuscripts without attention to the quality of the text, and the sheer mass of new books was distracting readers from the focus on the ancient authors most worthy of attention.7
Erasmus, the most widely read intellectual of the age, was explicit. Printers “fill the world with pamphlets and books that are foolish, ignorant, malignant, libelous, mad, impious and subversive; and such is the flood that even things that might have done some good lose all their goodness,” he wrote in the early 16th century.8 Strip the theological register and you have a pitch-perfect description of the contemporary content internet. The complaint is not about the technology. It is about the signal-to-noise ratio—and the cognitive cost of sorting one from the other.
Harvard historian Ann M. Blair, whose 2010 book Too Much to Know remains the definitive scholarly treatment of this period, argues that the feeling of being overwhelmed by information is not unique to the digital age—it has existed since antiquity and in many cultures.9 But the 16th century was the first moment when the volume increase was sudden enough, and the infrastructure for managing it immature enough, to produce something recognizable as a systemic crisis. Blair maintains that “judgment is as central as ever in selecting, assessing, and synthesizing information to create knowledge responsibly.”10 That sentence was written about Renaissance scholars. The scholars who remained effective did so by building what we would now call knowledge-management systems—tools designed to pre-filter, compress, and retrieve information at the point of decision, not at the point of curiosity.
The most ambitious of these was Conrad Gessner’s Bibliotheca Universalis. The Bibliotheca universalis was a monumental work compiled by the Swiss physician and naturalist Conrad Gesner in 1545; it is considered the first bibliography of its kind, aiming to systematically catalog and describe written works.11 It was the first truly comprehensive “universal” listing of all the books of the first century of printing—an alphabetical bibliography that listed all known books printed in Latin, Greek, or Hebrew, covering 10,000 titles by 1,800 authors.12 Gessner was not trying to read everything. He was building a map so that others could decide what was worth reading at all.
Blair studies the remedies that the learned devised to cope with that explosion of texts, notably by making summaries and excerpts which could be sorted and accessed in reference books.13 The commonplace book—a personal index of excerpts organized by theme—became the dominant cognitive tool of the educated 16th-century reader. It was not a reading log. It was a decision-support instrument: a curated store of pre-processed information that could be retrieved when a specific judgment was required. The earliest encyclopedias in the west appeared in the 16th century as a way to cope with the information explosion brought on by the printing press; the encyclopedia was the Renaissance’s answer to this problem.14

Luther was initially surprised at the printing press’s effectiveness; within two weeks of the posting of his 95 Theses, they were printed without his permission and distributed throughout Germany—and within a month they flooded Europe.15 His initial surprise is instructive. He had not planned a media campaign. He had written a theological argument. The press turned it into something else entirely.
What Luther did next is the lesson. Rather than being overwhelmed by the new medium’s logic, he adapted to it with precision. Luther’s pamphlets—known in German as Flugschriften (flying writings)—were fairly short in length, easy to read, inexpensive to print, and quickly produced in a matter of days; moreover, Luther wrote many of his pamphlets in German, which greatly increased the potential audience for his work.16 He was not trying to be comprehensive. He was optimizing for a specific decision in his audience’s mind: whether to accept or reject the authority of Rome.
Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, which previously would have circulated only among the literate scholars of Wittenberg, became a bestselling pamphlet within a year of its initial posting in 1517; between that date and c. 1525, Luther would publish over half a million works, establishing him as the first bestselling author of the Early Modern Period.17 Before 1518 there was little pamphlet activity in Europe, but by 1524 there is indication that the production of pamphlets had increased one-thousand percent, and much of the increase was due to the writing of Martin Luther.18
Luther did not win by reading more than his opponents. He won by deciding more clearly than they did. His output was disciplined by a thesis—a single, sharp claim that every piece of content either advanced or did not. That is not a communications strategy. It is a decision architecture.
What the cognitive science confirms
The 16th-century experience is not merely historical color. It maps precisely onto what behavioral science now understands about information and decision quality. The information overload effect states that when input exceeds processing capacity, more negative effects will ensue; in terms of decision behavior, information overload can occupy numerous cognitive resources and damage decision quality.19
The mechanism is well established. The stage of information integration and evaluation represents one of the most cognitively demanding phases of decision-making, where the limitations imposed by cognitive load become particularly pronounced—requiring simultaneous maintenance, manipulation, and comparison of multiple attributes across competing alternatives, creating substantial demands on the working memory system.20 More inputs do not produce better outputs when the processing architecture is already saturated.
Psychologist Barry Schwartz formalized this tension in his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice. The paradox of choice suggests that the more options we have, the less satisfied we feel with our decision—because having too many choices requires more cognitive effort, leading to decision fatigue and increased regret.21 Schwartz distinguishes two archetypes: maximizers, who settle for nothing less than the best possible option, and satisficers, who embrace “good enough” and then move on, freeing their minds for other activities.22 Schwartz found that maximizers tend to experience more regret across the board—having explored and considered so many different options, they are haunted by uncertainty and missed opportunities.23 The 16th-century scholars who built commonplace books were satisficers by design. He compiled it because scholars needed to decide which texts were worth acquiring, reading, and citing. Every piece of information a founder consumes should be traceable to a decision that is either pending or recurring. If it is not, it is not signal—it is ambient noise dressed as diligence.
Second: curation infrastructure is a competitive asset, not an administrative overhead. The commonplace book was not a productivity hack. It was a strategic tool that compressed the time between receiving information and deploying it in judgment. Information overload can be successfully managed by organizing complex problems into meaningful structures; it is generally accepted that some formal problem structuring facilitates quality decision-making and mitigates against the use of informal decision heuristics.24 The founders who build explicit decision frameworks—even simple ones—consistently outperform those who rely on intuition shaped by whatever they happened to read last week.
Third: the medium shapes the decision, not just the message. Luther understood that the pamphlet format was not neutral. Its brevity, its vernacular register, its low cost—all of these were arguments in themselves. They signaled accessibility and urgency. Founders who treat every information channel as equivalent—who give the same cognitive weight to a peer-reviewed study, a LinkedIn post, and a competitor’s press release—are making the same mistake as the 16th-century scholars who tried to read everything the press produced. The format of information is itself a filter. Use it.

The most valuable thing you can give a founder is not more information. It is a framework for reducing the information surface at the moment of decision. Design workshops, office hours, and content around specific pending decisions—not general knowledge transfer. The Renaissance encyclopedia was useful not because it contained everything but because it reduced the cost of finding the right thing at the right moment. Build that, not another reading list.
The forward view: every generation thinks it invented the firehose
The 16th century’s information panic resolved—not because the volume of books decreased, but because new institutions emerged to manage it. Eisenstein’s thesis is that the capacity of printing to preserve knowledge and to allow the accumulation of information fundamentally changed the mentality of early modern readers, with repercussions that transformed Western society.25 The transformation was not a reduction in information. It was a maturation in the cognitive and institutional infrastructure for handling it.
The same dynamic is underway now. Generative AI, algorithmic curation, and structured knowledge tools are the 21st century’s equivalent of the bibliography, the index, and the commonplace book. They will not solve the overload problem by reducing the volume of information. They will solve it—to the extent they solve it at all—by reducing the cost of filtering at the point of decision.
The founders who will benefit most from these tools are not the ones who use them to consume more. They are the ones who use them to decide better. That is the lesson Gessner learned in 1545. It has not expired.
